Día de Reyes, or Three Kings Day, is inspired by the story of the Three Wise Men – Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltazar. In Spain, the holiday is celebrated with even more excitement (at least by children!) than Christmas, as it’s the day when kids receive gifts. On the evening of January 5th, cities throughout Spain host the Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos, a parade celebrating the arrival of the Three Kings.

That night, kids put their shoes out, along with polvorones, turrones, and drinks for the Kings (and water for their camels!), and the next morning their shoes are filled with gifts. For breakfast is the famous Roscón de Reyes, a sweet jewel-like cake with two surprises inside – tradition has it that whoever finds a small king figurine is the king or queen of the celebration, while whoever finds a bean is responsible to buy next year’s roscón!

This Sunday, January 5th, we’re celebrating the Three Kings, complete with crown decorating and fun for children including an appearance from Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltazar themselves from 9am to 3pm at Spanish Diner. Roscón de Reyes will be available whole or by the slice at Spanish Diner and the Pasteles Kiosk, and of course there’s a prize – if you find the hidden treasure in your slice of roscón during the fiesta at Spanish Diner, you’ll win a $25 gift certificate!
